![]() ![]() For starters, when you create your avatar you are able to save it to one of three save slots in the game. I am far from the average user when it comes to most things, and VR is almost assuredly also one of those things, but there are a few things I hope change a little as this game grows. In many cases you can do whatever you want and design something silly or fantastic, but there are puzzles you can solve within each to unlock memories and nothing beats flexing that creative muscle. There are a ton of these games scattered across the three worlds and they are both wildly fun and deeply challenging. Some of them require exploration, hunting down bugs or finding secret video game cartidges, while others let you make you own ice sculptures and design epic sandcastles. But the games in Vacation Simulator span a incredible range of experiences. The folks at Owlchemy Labs have always included minigames in their VR experiences, short things you can get lost in for hours with friends and do whatever you can. You do this in a bunch of different ways, but mostly by approaching bots to solve their problems and playing minigames. In order to progress in this story, which includes exploring the other areas and unlocking the other vacation spots, you have to collect memories. But before you go, the robots set you up with a special watch and a mission. Leaving this room lets you go to one of three different vacation places to explore as you see fit. Once you've chosen your look, you're presented with a small hotel room to explore. ![]() Whatever you prefer, there's a ton of options. You've got a lot of flexibility here to make sure you look like you, or someone else entirely. Vacation Simulator starts you off with an Avatar Creator, which is a new thing for Owlchemy Labs. ![]() It's so easy to get lost in this game for hours, with a smile on your face the entire time. But humans also need time to do something that isn't work, and so your simulation now includes some time to relax. That sense of purpose is important to humans, according to the robots. Only, unlike other robot overlord stories, these robots are trying to give you purpose and make you feel like you're accomplishing things. You're one of the last remaining humans, and the robots are trying to keep you alive and functional. There were several times where I had to hold the "smart-bells" (as dumb-bells are referrred to in the game) over my head and, inevitably, one of them would go flying across the screen as the Quest lost controller tracking and thought I might have let go.You don't actually have to pay attention to the underlying story in Job Simulator, but if you do it becomes pretty clear something dark happened to humanity. The problem here is when you need to hold your hands above your head or outside the range of the camera's sensors. However, at other points you'll be doing "yoga" and other similar exercises with your controllers. This is because your hands will generally reach behind you quickly and pull the backpack up. I didn't have any issues with the backpack mechanic, where you reach behind you and pull off your "backpack" to manage any inventory you might have. While most actions in the game involve objects in front of your face, there are several points in the game where you'll be reaching behind you or above your head. Like the Oculus Rift S, the Oculus Quest uses cameras to track the movements of the controllers. The second issue comes with the controller tracking abilities of the Quest. Given that there's a fun avatar creation portion right in the beginning of the game, it means that more people in your household can play Vacation Simulator before you need to start deleting save slots. That brings the total number of save slots to five. One big improvement over the original release, and this will make our original reviewer Russell Holly happy, is the addition of two more save slots. Do your kids want to play Vacation Simulator (or are you a tad shorter than some other folks)? Enable "small human" mode in the settings, and everything magically scales to your height. Don't have much space to move? The world will be properly scaled based on your surroundings. ![]() Each section is divided up into perfectly sized segments that you can physically walk around in, based on your real-world physical play space.
